Saturday Afternoon Comfort Food

Mm Mm Good

We were the recipients of a tiny tease of snow yesterday, which is already fast disappearing from the earth, still warm from an unseasonably warm December. Our new deck remains white, but we are promised warming weather through Christmas, so that will also soon be gone.

The sun room, even with the added warmth of a lighted tree, seemed cold today. So the husband started the gas fireplace--and hot soup for lunch sounded great. We shared a can of Campbell's Tomato Bisque, adding my whole (sweet) Lactaid Milk, a sprinkling of celery salt and a tiny pat of butter. The grilled cheese on the side was white Italian bread with Kraft Deluxe cheese singles, fried in Land O'Lakes butter--almost as good as my Mom made, although it's really hard to remember .... probably home-canned "organic" tomatoes with "top milk" (cream floated to the top of our un-homogenized milk jars). I know that my mother used celery salt and I seem to remember that she may have added that pat of butter (not home-churned, but fresh from our Land O'Lakes plant in town.)

I had just looked at a Food and Wine Instagram post from an Amsterdam food blogger--of a hamburger on a bed of wasabi arugula dressed with a vinaigrette, plus chili Gouda, chimichurri, a fried egg with golden yolk dripping down the side, topped with  homemade panko-and-cornmeal-crisped onion rings. Insane!

My simple bowl of soup was good enough for me today, with those yummy buttered grilled cheese points dipped in--and it reminded me of Mom's tomato soup. It would not have been sufficient for a Big Farm lunch (dinner) but would certainly have been adequate for a Sunday supper! And it potentially was accompanied by one or two of her famous homemade "buns" which could have contained a slice of Land O'Lakes American cheese and some butter!

My photo was not Instagram-worthy. I snapped just one shot and didn't notice that my spoon had covered  the grilled cheese. But the soup was certainly Saturday-afternoon-tummy-worthy!
